Naturally, goes to Nessie, seen here right in the middle of making her “What the Eff are You Waking Me Up For?” expression:

My new camera arrived a couple of days ago, and I’ve finally had the free minute to open it up, charge the battery, install the software to process the RAW images, and snap a picture. This isn’t really an ideal shot to visibly demonstrate what a mammoth step up in image quality and flexibility this is (I’ll try a few other things soon), and I have shrunk it to web size so you can’t tell just how much data this thing captures, but let me give you this bit of nerdy info:

On my old camera, I knew that the longest shutter exposure I could use for a handheld shot was 1/80th of a second. After that, the shaking of my hand was too much for whatever anti-shake muscle the camera may have had, and the image became too blurry to use. Even with some ISO cheating, 1/80th is barely enough to handle your average indoor shooting setup without exterior assistance, which meant that, unless I had the sun to help me, I either had to take the time to set the tripod, or use the ugly-ass on-board flash (which could be made slightly less ugly with my clumsy diffuser attachment, which took more time to get in-place).

I got this shot, hand-held, with no flash and only two normal tabletop lamps lighting the room, with a shutter time of 1/6th of a second. 1/6th of a second. And do you see any motion blur? Because I sure don’t.

There is so much more that I like than I’m going to list here right now. We’ll wait until there’s some Pretty to accompany the nerd babble. For now, a reminder that my cat is still alive, and still full of attitude.

The honor of the first picture…
